Interior painting in Atlanta
Accent wall painting in Atlanta, from deep colors to geometric designs
One wall in a strong color or a painted pattern can change a room more than repainting the whole thing. It's also the kind of job where streaky coverage or a fuzzy tape line ruins the effect, so it has to be done right.

We paint accent walls in deep or saturated colors over tinted primer, plus color-blocked arches, stripes and geometric designs with crisp taped edges. A single solid accent wall usually takes one day; a patterned design may take two. Typical cost runs $285 to $695 for a solid wall and more for designs. Call (470) 458-0461 for a free walkthrough.
Deep colors behave differently from the light neutrals most walls are painted in. A navy, forest green or charcoal paint uses a clear base with a lot of colorant, which means less hiding power per coat. Rolled straight over a white wall, it can take four coats to look even and still show lap marks. We prime with a gray primer tinted to the right shade first, then apply two or three finish coats, so the color looks solid and even from every angle.
Patterned walls are about the tape line. We lay out geometric designs, stripes and color-blocked shapes with a laser level and pencil marks, apply a delicate-surface tape, and then seal the tape edge with the base wall color or a clear medium. Any bleed goes under the tape in the color that's already there, so when the tape comes off, the edge is sharp. Arches and curves get marked with a string compass or a cut template.
Choosing which wall is half the decision. Usually it's the wall you face when entering, the wall behind a bed or sofa, or a wall with a fireplace or built-ins. We can help with that and with color picks through a color consultation. If your room needs more than one wall, it often makes sense to combine the accent with full room painting so the surrounding walls and trim are fresh too.

When to call
Rooms that benefit from an accent wall
Open plan without definition
Large open spaces can feel undefined. A dark wall behind a dining area or a color-blocked section marks zones without adding walls.
A focal point with no impact
A fireplace, headboard wall or built-in bookcase can disappear against beige. Painting that wall a deeper color makes it the first thing you see.
Rental-safe updates
Some leases allow one painted wall. It gives a room personality with less to repaint at move-out, and it's easier to restore.
Kids' rooms and nurseries
Painted shapes, stripes and arches add character for children without wallpaper, and they're easy to change as kids grow.
Home offices on video
The wall behind your desk is in every video call. A painted accent gives a clean, considered background without clutter or shelves.

How the job runs
How we paint an accent wall that looks finished
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| A1 | Sample the color on the wallDeep colors look different on a chip than on a full wall. We paint large sample boards you can move around and view at different times of day. |
| A2 | Prep the surfaceDark and glossy colors show every flaw, so we fill nail holes, sand bumps and remove any texture irregularities before priming. |
| A3 | Prime with a tinted baseA gray or color-matched primer gives the finish coat a head start on coverage and cuts the number of coats needed for a solid color. |
| A4 | Lay out the designFor patterns, we mark lines with a laser level and pencil, check proportions with you, then tape and seal edges before painting. |
| A5 | Apply finish coatsWe cut in and roll each coat in consistent full-height passes, keeping a wet edge so deep colors don't show roller laps or flashing. |
| A6 | Pull tape and checkTape comes off while the last coat is still slightly soft, at a low angle, for a clean edge. We touch up any spots under raking light. |
Atlanta conditions
How Atlanta homes shape accent wall choices
Light changes how deep colors read, and Atlanta homes get a lot of filtered light through tree canopy. A dark green that looks rich on a sunny west wall can turn almost black on a north-facing wall under oaks. We bring samples to the room and look at them in the morning and late afternoon before committing. Intown townhomes and condos with big windows, like many in Midtown or Peachtree Park, often handle darker accents better than smaller rooms with one window.
Humidity matters for deep colors. Saturated paints are more sensitive to roller laps and flashing when they dry slowly, which happens during humid summers. We keep the HVAC running, avoid painting a dark wall in direct afternoon sun through glass, and allow the full recoat time. In apartments and condos, building rules may limit paint colors or require restoring walls at move-out, so check those before choosing a strong shade.

Paints, primers and tape for crisp accent walls
For deep colors, we prime with Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore primers tinted to a gray shade recommended for the color, then finish with paints that cover saturated colors well, such as Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Emerald. Matte or eggshell sheens hide roller marks better on dark walls than satin. We use FrogTape Delicate Surface or 3M 2080 tape, sealed with the base coat for clean lines, and a self-leveling laser for layout. Rollers are 3/8 inch microfiber covers for a smooth finish on drywall.
Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.
Questions
Accent wall painting questions from Atlanta homeowners
Why does a dark accent wall need so many coats?
Dark and saturated colors use a clear or deep base with a lot of colorant and less white pigment, so each coat hides less. Over a white wall, you might need four coats without primer. A gray tinted primer cuts that to two or three finish coats and gives a more even color depth.
Which wall should be the accent wall?
Usually the one your eye goes to first when entering the room, or the wall behind the main piece of furniture, like a bed or sofa. Walls with a fireplace, built-ins or windows can work too, but avoid walls broken up by several doors. We can walk the room with you and suggest the strongest option.
Can you paint a geometric design on a textured wall?
Yes, though lines won't be quite as sharp as on smooth drywall because tape can't seal fully into texture. Sealing the tape edge with the base color helps a lot. On heavy texture, simple stripes and large blocks look better than fine geometric patterns.
Will a dark wall make my room look smaller?
Not necessarily. A deep color on one wall can make that wall seem to recede, which can make a room feel deeper. It depends on light and room size. In small rooms with little natural light, a mid-tone often works better than very dark. Sample boards on the wall help you see the effect before painting.
How hard is it to paint over a dark accent wall later?
It takes a coat of primer and two coats of the new color, which is a normal repaint. Going from navy back to white without primer would take several coats, so we always prime when covering a deep color. It's an easy change compared with removing wallpaper.
