Color consultation in Atlanta for interiors, exteriors and whole-house palettes

You've taped a dozen chips to the wall and they all look wrong once the light changes. Picking paint colors is hard because color shifts with light, sheen and everything around it, and a tiny chip shows almost none of that.

Quick answer

We help you choose interior and exterior colors using large painted sample boards, checks of undertone and light reflectance value (LRV), and the fixed finishes already in your home. A consultation visit runs about 90 minutes to two hours, with samples left for a few days. Typical cost is $165 to $385, often credited toward a paint project. Call (470) 458-0461.

Most color mistakes come from three things: tiny samples, ignoring undertones, and judging color in only one kind of light. A gray that looks neutral on a chip can read blue in a north-facing room and purple-pink near a red brick fireplace. A white that seems clean on the card turns yellow under warm bulbs. We start by looking at your rooms or your exterior in daylight, noting which way windows face and what can't change: floors, countertops, tile, brick, stone, roof color.

Then we narrow choices down to a short list and paint them on large boards, about two feet square, with two coats so the color is true. You move the boards around: next to trim, near the floor, on the wall opposite the window. Living with them for a few days, morning to evening, is how most homeowners settle on a color with confidence.

Consultations work well before an interior repaint or a full exterior, and for single decisions too: one stubborn hallway, a front door, a kitchen with new counters. We're not tied to one brand and will pull samples from whichever fan decks suit your house. If you already have a favorite color, we'll help you find the right white and trim to go with it.

When to call

Signs a color consultation will save you money

Samples all look the same

When five grays or whites blur together on the wall, the difference is in undertone. We can point out which leans green, blue, pink or yellow, and which fits your light.

A color looked different at the store

Store lighting is bright and cool. Your home has warmer bulbs, filtered window light and colored floors that bounce color onto walls. A color has to be judged where it lives.

New countertops or flooring

Fixed finishes set the palette. New quartz, brick, tile or wood floors with strong undertones can make an existing wall color look off, and the walls need to follow.

Open floor plan, no flow

When rooms flow into each other, one color per room can feel choppy. A whole-house palette ties connected spaces together while still letting each room feel different.

HOA or historic review

Exterior colors often need approval. We help you pick a scheme that fits the guidelines, and prepare the color names and codes the board usually asks for.

You repainted once already

If you've painted a room and it still feels wrong, that second attempt is expensive. A short consultation now is cheaper than a third round of paint and labor.

Scope of work

What our color consultation covers

How the job runs

How a color consultation works with us

Color Consultation ticketSteps in order, with the work named
StepWhat happens
A1Talk through goalsWe start with what you like and what bothers you now: too dark, too cold, too busy. Photos of rooms or houses you love are helpful, and so are colors you know you dislike.
A2Read the light and finishesWe note window direction, bulb color, and fixed finishes in each space. North light is cool and even; south light is warm and changes through the day; west light turns orange in late afternoon.
A3Build a short listFrom fan decks we pull three to five candidates per space, compare undertones against your fixed finishes, and check LRV so a color won't read darker than you expect.
A4Paint large samplesWe paint sample boards at full size with two coats and the planned sheen, and label them. For exteriors we test boards against siding, brick and roof at different times of day.
A5Live with themYou keep the boards for several days and move them around. We follow up by phone to talk through what you've seen and narrow it down to final picks.
A6Write the color scheduleWe give you a written list of every surface, color name, code and sheen, so the painting goes smoothly whether it's us painting or you keeping it for touch-ups.

Atlanta conditions

Choosing color for Atlanta light and Atlanta houses

Our tree canopy changes interior color more than people expect. Light that passes through oak and pine leaves picks up a green cast, so north and east rooms in shaded neighborhoods like Peachtree Park or Morningside often make cool grays read greener and duller. Warmer whites and greiges usually behave better there. Bright, open lots in newer subdivisions get the opposite: strong southern and western sun that washes out light colors and makes a pale wall look almost white by midafternoon.

Outside, red brick and the orange tones of Georgia clay set the starting point on many homes. Brick ranches from the 1950s and 1960s usually look right with trim colors that respect the brick's undertone rather than fight it. Many HOAs in Gwinnett, Cobb and north Fulton publish approved palettes, and several intown historic districts review exterior changes, so we start exterior consultations by checking what applies to your street before we fall in love with a color.

Sample boards, fan decks and tools for color decisions

We carry full fan decks from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG, plus Farrow & Ball and Dunn-Edwards samples for homeowners who want those palettes. Sample boards are white foam board or primed hardboard painted with two coats in the actual sheen you'll use, since sheen changes how a color reads. We check LRV numbers from each maker's data and compare undertones by holding colors against a pure white reference. For exteriors we sometimes brush a two-foot patch directly on siding in a spot that will be painted anyway.

Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.

Questions

Color consultation questions from Atlanta homeowners

What is LRV, and why should I care about it?

LRV, or light reflectance value, is a number from 0 to 100 that tells you how much light a color reflects. A white might be 85 or higher; a deep navy might be under 10. It helps predict how bright a room will feel. In a dim north room, a color with an LRV below about 50 can read much darker than its chip, so we use it to steer choices.

Why do my gray walls look blue or purple?

Every gray has an undertone, and the light in your room exaggerates it. Cool north light pushes grays toward blue. Warm floors or a red brick fireplace can make some grays look purple. The fix is picking a gray with an undertone that works with your light and finishes, often a warmer gray or a greige, tested on large boards.

Should my whole house be one color?

It can be, and it's a clean look in open plans. But one color often reads differently room to room as light changes. A whole-house palette usually uses one main color in shared spaces, a lighter or darker version in connected rooms, and a few accent colors for bedrooms or a study, all with the same undertone so it feels connected.

Can you help pick colors for my HOA approval?

Yes. We start with your HOA's approved list if there is one, then narrow it by what suits your roof, brick or stone. We give you color names, codes and sheens, and photos of sample boards on the house if the board wants them. Final approval rests with the HOA, so we recommend sending it in before buying paint.

How many colors should we test before deciding?

Three to five per space is usually plenty. More than that and they start to look the same. We narrow choices before painting boards, using undertone and LRV, so the boards you see are already strong candidates. If none of them feels right after a few days, we pull a second round that adjusts in the direction you liked.
