Interior painting in Atlanta
Popcorn ceiling removal in Atlanta, scraped smooth and repainted
Popcorn ceilings trap dust, cast shadows and date a house instantly. Scraping them is messy and depends on testing for asbestos first in older homes, but done right you end up with a smooth, painted ceiling.

We remove acoustic popcorn ceilings by sealing off the room, testing older textures for asbestos, wetting and scraping the texture, then skimming, priming and painting the ceiling. A typical room takes two to three days including drying time. Typical cost runs $2.15 to $4.85 per square foot of ceiling. Call (470) 458-0461 for a free walkthrough.
Popcorn, or acoustic, texture was sprayed on ceilings from the 1950s into the late 1980s because it hid flaws and dampened sound. It also collects dust and cobwebs, yellows over time, and makes a room look darker. Taking it off is straightforward work but messy, and it starts with a question: what's in it? Some acoustic textures applied before the early 1980s contained asbestos, so we have ceilings in older homes tested before we touch them.
If the test comes back clear, we cover the floors, walls and furniture completely, wet the texture in sections with a pump sprayer and scrape it with a wide blade. Unpainted popcorn usually softens in a few minutes. Painted popcorn resists water, so it takes longer or needs a different approach. Once it's off, the ceiling underneath almost always needs work, since it was never finished smooth to begin with.
That's the part that decides how good the ceiling looks. We tape loose seams, skim coat the entire surface and sand it smooth, then prime and paint with a flat ceiling paint. If you want walls done too, it makes sense to schedule interior painting right after, since walls often pick up some scraping marks. Any damaged spots get the same treatment as a standard drywall patch.

When to call
Signs it's time to remove the popcorn ceiling
Yellowed or stained texture
Popcorn darkens from smoke, cooking and age. Water stains spread into the texture and can't be cleaned. Painting over it adds weight and makes later removal harder.
Texture falling in flakes
If pieces drop onto furniture or floors, the bond is failing. Leaving it creates ongoing dust and mess, especially near ceiling fans and vents.
Planning new lighting
Adding recessed lights or changing fixtures cuts holes that are hard to patch in popcorn. Removing it first makes the ceiling easy to repair and repaint.
Selling or remodeling
Buyers see popcorn as a dated finish and a possible test cost. Smooth ceilings make rooms look larger and brighter in listing photos.
Dust and allergy concerns
The rough surface collects dust and cobwebs that are hard to clean. Smooth painted ceilings can be dusted and wiped like any other surface.

How the job runs
How we remove popcorn ceilings step by step
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| A1 | Test before anything elseFor pre-1980s textures, we arrange a lab test before work begins. If asbestos is found, removal has to be handled by an abatement contractor first; we return to skim and paint after. |
| A2 | Seal the roomPlastic goes over the floors and up the walls, supply and return vents are covered, and doorways get zippered plastic. Furniture leaves the room if possible, and anything that stays is wrapped. |
| A3 | Wet and scrapeWe mist sections with water and let it soak in, then scrape with a wide blade into a mud pan. Wet scraping keeps dust down and protects the drywall. |
| A4 | Repair the bare ceilingScraping exposes seams, gouges and fasteners that the texture used to hide. We retape loose joints, reset popped screws and fill gouges with setting compound so the skim coat goes on a solid base. |
| A5 | Skim and sandWe skim the whole ceiling with a wide knife or roller-applied compound, then sand smooth with a pole sander attached to a dust extraction vacuum. |
| A6 | Prime and paintPrimer seals the new compound, then two coats of flat ceiling paint go on in cross-rolled passes. Plastic comes down and the room is cleaned. |
Atlanta conditions
Atlanta homes and popcorn ceiling removal
Popcorn ceilings are common in brick ranches from the 1960s and in 1970s and 1980s split-levels across the metro, including many homes in DeKalb County and Cobb. In these houses we usually find popcorn applied directly over drywall that was only taped, not finished, so a full skim is almost always part of the job. Some of these homes also had the texture painted at some point, which slows scraping because water can't soak through the paint layer.
Atlanta humidity affects the schedule. Wet texture and fresh skim coats dry slowly in summer, so a ceiling that would be ready to sand overnight in dry weather may need an extra day. We run fans and keep the HVAC set on cool in surrounding rooms, but we keep the return vents in the work room sealed so dust doesn't travel through the ducts. In winter, drying goes faster with the heat on.

Tools and finishes for smooth ceilings
We wet texture with a pump sprayer, sometimes adding a little dish soap so the water penetrates, and scrape with 10 to 12 inch blades into mud pans to keep debris off the floor. Skim coats use lightweight joint compound thinned slightly and applied with a wide knife or a roller and squeegee for larger ceilings. Sanding is done with a pole sander connected to a dust extraction vacuum. We prime the skimmed surface with a drywall primer and finish with a flat ceiling paint such as Sherwin-Williams Eminence or Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint.
Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.
Questions
Popcorn ceiling removal questions from Atlanta homeowners
Does my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
Only a lab test can tell. Acoustic texture applied before the early 1980s may contain asbestos, so in homes built before then we arrange testing before any scraping. A small sample goes to a lab, and results usually come back within a few days. If it's positive, removal must be done by an abatement contractor before we skim and paint.
Can you just paint over the popcorn instead?
You can, with a thick-nap roller and a sprayer for coverage, but it makes future removal much harder because water can't soak through the paint. It also tends to pull off chunks of texture as you roll. Painting is a short-term fix. Removing it once and skimming leaves a ceiling you'll never need to scrape again.
How much dust does popcorn removal make?
Wet scraping produces wet debris, not airborne dust, and it lands on the plastic we've laid down. Sanding the skim coat creates fine dust, which is why we use a vacuum-connected sander and seal the room's vents and doorways. Expect some light dust cleanup in the room itself.
Will my ceiling be perfectly smooth after removal?
It will be smooth and painted, but how flat it looks depends on the framing. Older ceilings sometimes have slight dips between joists that popcorn used to hide. A full skim coat helps a lot. In rooms with strong side lighting, we can apply a second skim coat for an even flatter finish.
Do I need to leave the house during removal?
Not usually. We seal the work room so the rest of the house stays usable. If the room is a main living area or kitchen, plan around it being closed for two or three days. People with breathing sensitivities may prefer to be out during sanding, which is typically a few hours.
