Exterior painting in Atlanta

Front door and shutter painting in Atlanta with lasting enamel finishes

Your front door and shutters take more sun, rain and hands than any other painted surface on the house. When they're faded, chalky or peeling, the whole front looks older than it is.

Quick answer

We paint front doors and exterior shutters across metro Atlanta using exterior enamels in gloss, semi-gloss or satin, on wood, steel and fiberglass. A front door usually takes 1 to 2 days with dry time; shutters take 2 to 4 days including take-down. Typical front door painting runs $285 to $645; a full shutter set runs $590 to $1,860. Call (470) 458-0461.

A front door is small but it's the most looked-at painted surface on your house, and it's touched every day. That means it needs a harder, smoother finish than siding. We use exterior enamels that level out brush marks and cure to a hard surface, and we pick the sheen to suit the door: high gloss for a classic paneled door, satin for a modern flush or fiberglass door where you don't want every ripple to show.

How we handle the door depends on its material and your schedule. Wood doors often come off the hinges and are painted flat on sawhorses in the garage, so all six sides get sealed and runs don't develop. Steel and fiberglass doors are usually painted in place, with a temporary plastic door hung while the finish dries if security matters. Either way, hardware is removed rather than masked.

Shutters are a separate puzzle. Most are screwed or clipped to the wall, and painting them in place leaves the backs and edges bare, plus a line of old color on the siding behind. We take them down, number them, clean and paint both sides, then rehang with new fasteners. It pairs well with a color planning session if you're changing the front palette.

When to call

Signs your door or shutters need repainting

Sun-faded paint on the door

West- and south-facing doors fade first, often unevenly where a storm door or overhang shades part of the panel. Uneven color means the finish is breaking down.

Peeling around the bottom rail

The bottom of a wood door takes splash and pooled water. Peeling there means end grain is soaking up moisture, which can swell and warp the door.

Sticky or soft paint

A door that sticks to the weatherstripping, or paint that feels tacky in summer, usually means the wrong product was used. A proper enamel cures hard.

Chalky or faded shutters

Vinyl and wood shutters fade faster than siding. When they look washed out next to the house color, a fresh coat restores the contrast.

Cracking at shutter joints

Wood shutters crack at stile and rail joints and louver ends, letting water in. Left alone, they rot from the inside.

A color that no longer fits

After new siding, a roof or brick paint, the old door and shutter color may clash. Changing these two items has an outsized effect on the front of the house.

Scope of work

What our door and shutter painting covers

  • Removing knobs, deadbolt trim, kick plates and knockers instead of masking them
  • Taking wood doors off hinges to paint flat when the schedule allows it
  • Cleaning, deglossing and sanding the door, filling dents and checking weatherstripping
  • Bonding primer suited to wood, steel or fiberglass before the enamel coats
  • Two coats of exterior enamel in the sheen you choose, brushed and tipped off
  • Painting the door frame, threshold edges and brick molding in the trim color
  • Taking shutters down, numbering them and painting both sides plus every edge
  • Rehanging shutters with new stainless or color-matched fasteners and reinstalling hardware

How the job runs

How a door and shutter refresh comes together

StepWhat happens
A1Choose color and sheenWe look at the door material, its exposure to sun and how your hardware finishes will sit against the color. Gloss shows craftsmanship on paneled doors; satin forgives dents on steel.
A2Remove hardware and shuttersKnobs, locks and plates come off and are bagged and labeled. Shutters are numbered by window and taken down, which also lets us clean and touch up the siding behind them.
A3Prep each surfaceWood is sanded and filled; steel dents get body filler and rust spots are spot primed. Fiberglass is cleaned with a degreaser and lightly scuffed so primer bonds without cutting through the texture.
A4Prime and enamelA bonding primer goes on first, then two coats of enamel. Doors are brushed with long, even strokes; shutters are sprayed or brushed, with louvers worked from the back so paint doesn't pool.
A5Cure before reuseEnamels feel dry in hours but need a day or more before weatherstripping can press on them. We prop the door slightly or use a temporary door so the finish doesn't stick shut.
A6Rehang and reinstallHardware goes back on, the door is rehung and adjusted, and shutters return to their numbered windows on new fasteners. We check that every shutter sits level and tight.

Atlanta conditions

Atlanta sun, storms and HOA rules for doors and shutters

West-facing front doors in Atlanta take the full afternoon sun in summer, and dark colors on steel doors can get hot enough to soften cheap paint or warp a storm door's frame. If your door faces west or sits behind glass storm doors, we'll talk through lighter or heat-reflective color options and venting the storm door. North-facing entries stay shaded and humid, so dry times stretch and we may leave the door off the hinges longer before rehanging.

Many neighborhoods across Alpharetta, Peachtree City and the north suburbs, plus some historic districts intown, review exterior color changes, and front doors and shutters are included. A bold red or teal door may need approval even when the siding color isn't changing. We'll provide exact color names and sheens for your HOA packet. Spring pollen is the other local factor: wet enamel collects it, so we paint doors indoors in a garage when we can and shutters as sprayed panels away from the trees.

Enamels and primers for doors and shutters

For doors, we commonly use Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, Benjamin Moore Advance or Regal Select High Gloss, or a Farrow & Ball Exterior Eggshell when a softer historic look is wanted. Fiberglass and steel get a bonding primer like Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 first. Wood doors may get Zinsser Cover Stain on bare spots. Shutters get the same enamel or a vinyl-safe acrylic if they're vinyl. Purdy and Wooster brushes and fine-finish foam rollers keep the surface smooth.

Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.

Questions

Front door & shutter painting questions from Atlanta homeowners

Can a fiberglass front door be painted?

Yes. Fiberglass takes paint well once it's cleaned of wax and mold release residue and lightly scuffed. A bonding primer goes on first, then two coats of exterior enamel. Many fiberglass doors are stained to look like wood; if yours is, painting will change that look permanently, so we'll confirm you're ready before starting.

How long until I can close my freshly painted front door?

You can close it the same evening, but the paint will still be soft against the weatherstripping. Most exterior enamels need at least a day before light contact and a week or more to fully harden. We often apply a thin barrier like wax paper at contact points or prop the door to keep it from sticking.

Why take shutters down instead of painting them on the wall?

Painting in place leaves the backs, edges and inner louvers bare, which is where water gets in and rot starts. It also leaves a visible line of old color on the siding behind. Taking them down lets us coat all sides evenly, clean or paint the wall behind and rehang them straight on fresh fasteners.

Is high gloss a good choice for my front door?

On a smooth paneled wood or steel door in good shape, high gloss looks crisp and wipes clean easily. It also shows every dent, brush mark and imperfection, so prep takes longer. On dented or textured doors, a satin or semi-gloss enamel looks cleaner. We'll suggest the sheen after inspecting the door closely.

Can you paint vinyl shutters a dark color?

Usually, because shutters are small and hang slightly off the wall with air behind them. Even so, very dark colors on a west-facing vinyl shutter can warp in an Atlanta summer. We check the shutter maker's guidance and use a vinyl-safe paint with heat-reflective pigments when the color is deep.
