Specialty finishes in Atlanta
Venetian plaster and decorative finishes in Atlanta homes
You want a wall with real depth and movement, something that catches light like polished stone or soft suede, not another flat color. Decorative plaster can do that, but it only looks right when it's applied by hand, in thin layers, with patience.

We apply Venetian plaster, lime plaster, metallic and faux finishes in thin troweled layers, then burnish or seal them for the sheen you want. Most accent walls and powder rooms take two to four days, since each layer has to dry. Typical cost runs $11.85 to $27.40 per square foot of wall. Venetian plaster is a lime or acrylic-based plaster applied with a steel trowel in two to four very thin coats, each pressed and crossed over the last. The overlapping strokes create soft variations in tone, and burnishing the last coat with the trowel compresses the surface into a polished, almost marble-like sheen. Lime plaster is related but tends to be more matte, with a chalky, cloudy texture that suits older homes and quieter rooms.
These finishes shine in spaces where people pause and look: a dining room, powder room, entry, the wall behind a range hood, or a fireplace surround. We also apply metallic plasters, strie and other faux finishes. On a large house, decorative plaster is usually an accent rather than every wall, and it works well beside an accent color in a nearby room.
Every finish starts with a sample. We make boards in your colors and sheen so you can see how the plaster moves in your light before we commit a wall to it. Wall prep matters just as much: plaster magnifies flaws, so walls are repaired and primed carefully first. A small sample also tells you how much movement you like, from subtle cloud to bold, high-contrast veining.

When to call
When decorative plaster is the right choice
A room that feels flat
When paint alone doesn't give a dining room or entry the presence you want, a troweled finish adds depth and soft movement that changes with the light.
Small, enclosed spaces
Powder rooms and small dens are ideal. A polished plaster makes the space feel finished and special, and the small wall area keeps cost reasonable.
A focal wall or fireplace
Plaster on a fireplace surround, a wall behind a bed or the wall around a range hood gives the room one strong point of interest without busy pattern.
Walls with minor imperfections
Matte lime finishes have a natural cloudiness that disguises minor waves better than flat paint. Polished Venetian, by contrast, needs smooth walls to look its finest.
Tired faux finishes
Sponged or rag-rolled walls from the 1990s can be updated with a modern plaster finish, or smoothed and painted flat if you'd rather go simpler.
Matching an old-world style
Mediterranean, Spanish revival or European-style homes often call for lime or Venetian plaster to match their architecture and existing details.

How the job runs
How a Venetian plaster wall comes together
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| A1 | Choose finish and colorWe review samples and photos together and pick a plaster type, color and sheen. Then we make boards so you can judge them in the room at different times of day. |
| A2 | Prepare the wallHoles and cracks are filled, uneven areas skim-coated, and the wall sanded smooth. Plaster shows every flaw under it, so this step often takes as long as applying the finish. |
| A3 | PrimeWe apply a tinted primer made for the plaster system. It seals the wall, gives the first coat even suction and helps the base color come through consistently. |
| A4 | Trowel the layersThe first coat goes on thin with a steel trowel in short, crossing strokes. After drying, the second and third coats build depth, each one tightened to fill the texture below. |
| A5 | Burnish or leave matteFor a polished look, we compress the final coat with the trowel or fine abrasive until it shines. Lime finishes are often left soft and matte instead. |
| A6 | Seal and protectIn powder rooms, kitchens and baths we apply a wax or clear sealer that resists water spots and fingerprints. We let it cure before the room goes back into use. |
Atlanta conditions
Decorative plaster in Atlanta homes and climate
Humid Atlanta summers slow plaster drying, and it's important that each coat dries fully before the next goes on. We run the home's air conditioning, keep the room closed and avoid scheduling the finish coats during long stretches of rain when indoor humidity creeps up. In winter, low heat slows things too, so we keep rooms within the temperature range the plaster label calls for. Patience between coats is the difference between a finish that glows and one that blotches.
Polished plaster finds a home in many Atlanta interiors: formal dining rooms in North Buckhead and Paces homes, powder rooms in newer townhomes, and Spanish revival and Mediterranean houses in older parts of Brookhaven and Druid Hills. Lime plaster suits historic homes because it breathes and has a long history in older construction. In intown condos and lofts, a single plastered wall often gives an open room a focal point without crowding it.

Small rooms like powder rooms have a minimum charge since setup and drying time are similar.

Plasters, trowels and finishes we work with
We use traditional lime-based Venetian plasters and acrylic-modified versions that are a bit more forgiving in humid rooms. For matte lime finishes, Romabio and similar mineral products give soft, cloudy walls. Metallic finishes use pigmented plasters or metallic glazes over a tinted base. Tools are stainless and plastic Venetian trowels in several sizes, flexible spatulas for corners and fine abrasive pads for burnishing. Sealers are natural or synthetic waxes and water-based clear coats suited to the plaster and the room's moisture.
Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.
Questions
Venetian plaster & decorative finishes questions from Atlanta homeowners
How is Venetian plaster different from a faux painted finish?
Venetian plaster is a real plaster layer, built from several thin troweled coats. It has physical depth, and burnishing gives it a true polish like stone. Faux finishes are paint or glaze techniques that imitate texture or pattern on a flat painted wall. Faux costs less and suits some styles, but it can't match the depth and feel of real plaster up close.
Can Venetian plaster go in a bathroom with a shower?
In a powder room, yes, and it's one of the most popular spots. In a full bath it works on walls away from direct water when sealed with a water-resistant wax or clear coat. Inside a shower, traditional Venetian plaster isn't the right choice. A related finish called tadelakt is made for wet areas but is a separate and more involved process.
Is lime plaster durable enough for a busy hallway?
Lime plaster hardens over time and is quite tough, though it can scuff or mark when struck by a hard object. The good news is that small marks can often be buffed or touched up with more plaster, blending into the finish better than a patch on flat paint. In high-traffic halls, a sealer adds protection without changing the look much.
Can you apply plaster over textured or orange-peel walls?
Not directly, if you want a polished look. Texture shows through thin plaster coats, so we skim-coat the wall smooth first, which adds a day or more. For a matte lime finish, some light texture can be acceptable since the finish is meant to look soft and uneven. We'll look at your walls and explain which approach fits.
How do I clean and maintain a polished plaster wall?
Dust with a soft cloth and wipe marks with a damp microfiber cloth and plain water. Avoid harsh cleaners, which can dull the wax or etch the lime. In powder rooms, the sealer protects against splashes; a fresh coat of wax every few years keeps it looking good. If a spot gets damaged, we can repair and re-burnish it.
