Exterior painting in Atlanta
Garage door painting in Atlanta for steel, wood and composite doors
The garage door is often the largest single surface on the front of the house, and a faded, chalky or rusting door drags down an otherwise fresh exterior. Painting it well takes more than rolling a coat across the panels.

We clean, degloss, spot-treat rust, prime and paint garage doors in the correct panel order, keeping paint off weatherstripping and rollers. A standard single door takes about a day including dry time, and a double door one to two. Typical cost runs $345 to $695 for a single door and $485 to $985 for a double. Call (470) 458-0461 and we'll look at the door in person.
Most garage doors in metro Atlanta are steel with a factory baked-on finish, and steel doors chalk and fade on south and west faces within ten or fifteen years. The factory coating is slick, so new paint needs a proper clean and scuff, and any dents or scratches that reached bare metal need a rust-inhibiting primer. Older intown homes and some custom builds have wood doors, which need the same prep as any exterior wood. Composite and fiberglass doors fall somewhere between.
Order matters on a raised-panel door. We paint the recessed panel edges first, then the panel faces, then the horizontal rails and finally the vertical stiles, so brush marks run with the construction and nothing dries with a lap line. We also work the door in sections, raising it partway to reach the edges of each section. Window inserts are masked, and the top section is painted last so it never rubs the header while wet.
Color choice is half the job. Matching the trim keeps a wide door quiet. Matching the siding makes it disappear. A darker door, or a two-tone door with contrasting panels, turns it into a feature, and our color guidance helps you pick which way to go. We brush a sample on one panel first, so you can see the color against your brick or siding in morning and afternoon light.

When to call
Signs your garage door needs paint
Chalk on your fingers
Wipe the door with your hand. A powdery residue means the factory finish has broken down. It won't protect the steel much longer and won't hold new paint without washing.
Faded on one side
A door that's noticeably lighter on the panels facing the afternoon sun shows UV breakdown. Fading is uneven, so touch-ups never match; the whole door needs coats.
Rust at the bottom edge
Steel doors rust first along the bottom section where water and road salt splash. Small spots treated now prevent rust that eats through and needs a section replaced.
Peeling on a wood door
Wood garage doors peel and check on the bottom rail and panel edges. Left alone, the bottom section starts to rot and the door gets heavy and unbalanced.
Color no longer fits the house
After a siding or trim repaint, an old almond or bright white garage door can stand out badly. Repainting it to coordinate is a small cost for a big change.
Dings and scratches to bare metal
Every scrape that reaches bare steel becomes a rust point. Spot-priming these before painting keeps the finish from bubbling around them later.

How the job runs
How we paint a garage door step by step
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| A1 | Check the materialWe identify steel, wood, composite or fiberglass and test the existing finish. A steel door with its original coating needs different prep than a wood door with years of paint on it. |
| A2 | Clean and deglossWe wash both the face and the bottom edge with a degreaser, rinse, let the door dry, and scuff the surface with fine abrasive pads so primer and paint bite. |
| A3 | Treat rust and primeRust is sanded or wire-brushed to sound metal, then spot-primed with a rust-inhibiting primer. Wood doors get exterior primer on bare spots and end grain. |
| A4 | Mask the moving partsWeatherstripping, rubber seals, rollers and tracks get masked. Painted weatherstrip cracks and sticks, and paint on rollers jams the door. We protect the opener safety sensors too. |
| A5 | Paint in panel orderWe brush panel edges, roll the panel faces and rails, then lay off the stiles. Each section of the door is worked while raised slightly so no edge is skipped. |
| A6 | Cure and reopenWe leave the door down while it dries to the touch, typically a few hours. Then we cycle it once to make sure no seal sticks, and give you a day before heavy use. |
Atlanta conditions
Sun, storms and HOAs: garage doors in metro Atlanta
South and west-facing doors in newer subdivisions around Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Lawrenceville take hard afternoon sun all summer, and dark colors on steel doors get very hot. A dark color can also make a thin steel door bow a bit in full sun. Paint manufacturers sell heat-reflective colorants for darker shades, and we use them on sunny doors when a homeowner wants a deep charcoal or black.
Many HOAs across Gwinnett, Cobb and north Fulton keep an approved list of garage door colors, and some require the door to match trim exactly. We check that list before ordering paint. Atlanta's summer storms also push water under the door, so the bottom rail and bottom seal take more abuse here than anywhere else on the door, and we spend extra prep time there. Painting in the morning avoids afternoon rain hitting a fresh coat.

Primers, paints and tools for garage doors
On steel doors we use a rust-inhibiting primer like Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial or a direct-to-metal acrylic, followed by an exterior acrylic in satin, which hides dents better than gloss. Benjamin Moore Regal and Sherwin-Williams Emerald are common topcoats. Dark colors get a heat-reflective tint when available. Wood doors are primed with an exterior oil primer on bare spots. Tools are simple: degreaser, maroon scuff pads, Purdy angled brushes for panel edges, and a 4-inch mini roller for faces so the texture stays even.
Paints, primers and stains our painters work with every week, from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore to PPG and Romabio.
Questions
Garage door painting questions from Atlanta homeowners
Will painting a steel garage door void its finish coverage from the maker?
Some door makers do say that field painting changes their finish coverage, so it's worth checking your door's paperwork first. Many older doors are past that period anyway. If yours is newer, you can still repaint; just keep a copy of the paint products we used. Proper cleaning, scuffing and priming matter far more to how long the new color lasts.
Can a dark color warp my garage door?
On thin, uninsulated steel doors facing strong sun, a very dark color can heat the panels enough to bow slightly. Insulated doors handle it much better. We check the door type and its sun exposure, and for dark shades we use heat-reflective tints and avoid the deepest blacks on thin single-skin doors that sit in full afternoon sun.
Do you paint the inside of the garage door too?
We can, though most people leave it. The inside is out of the weather and the factory finish usually lasts. Painting it does make sense when the garage is used as a workshop or gym or after water damage. Insulated doors with a vinyl back skin need a bonding primer. It adds a modest amount to the cost.
How do you keep paint off the rubber weatherstripping?
We mask the bottom seal and the side and top weatherstrip with tape and paper before priming. We also run a putty knife along the edge while cutting in so paint stops at the door face. Painted rubber cracks, sticks to the frame and lets water in. Any old paint already on seals can usually be cleaned off; badly damaged strips are cheap to replace.
Can you add a wood-look finish to a steel door?
Yes, with a faux wood grain finish using a base coat, a gel stain and a graining tool, then a clear exterior topcoat. It suits craftsman and farmhouse homes. It takes longer than a solid color and needs a recoat of clear every few years in full sun. We'll show you a sample board first so you can judge it in your light.
